What is Sanitary Napkin?
A sanitary napkin, also known as a sanitary pad, menstrual pad, sanitary towel, or feminine napkin, is an absorbent item worn by women in their underwear when menstruating, bleeding after giving birth, recovering from gynecologic surgery, experiencing a miscarriage or abortion, or in any other situation where it is necessary to absorb a flow of blood from the vagina.
A feminine sanitary napkin is another important disposable absorbent hygiene product. It's functions are to absorb menstrual liquid discharge, isolate wetness from the skin, retain menstrual liquid discharge, and isolate menstrual liquid from the female’s environment. These functions should be accompanied by providing a feel of maximum comfort, having an aesthetic appearance, preventing odor, and staying in place.
Sanitary napkins are usually composed of three layers. Their inner surface layer that contacts the skin is made of nonwoven. The performance items required are the quick transfer of menstrual blood from the inner surface to the central layer and the stop of counter blood flow to the inner surface, to give feeling of comfortable softness and pliability, and wet mechanical sustainability. Its central layer composed of super absorbent polymer absorbs the transferred blood. Its outer surface layer is usually made of polyethylene (PE) film to guard the leakage of the blood.
Advantages of Sanitary Napkin
Easy to Use
Sanitary pads are relatively easy to use and require no special skills or techniques. They have an adhesive side that sticks to underwear, ensuring they stay in place during use. Mostly people tend to find it easier to use pads during their periods, making their use and disposal much easier.
Easy Availability
Sanitary pads are widely available in most stores and pharmacy shops, making them easily accessible to menstruating individuals.

Absorbency
Sanitary pads are designed to be highly absorbent in order to keep you from feeling uncomfortable.
Comfort
Sanitary pads come in different sizes and thicknesses, regular(280 mm) and overnight (315 mm) allowing people to choose a pad that suits their comfort and size preferences. They are soft and reduce discomfort during menstruation.
No Health Risks
If used correctly, Bio sanitary pads do not pose significant health risks. They are made from 100% organic cotton and bamboo pulp, minimizing the chances of allergic reactions or infections.
Characteristics of Sanitary Napkin

Leakproof for Hours
We cannot avoid our menstrual cycle. And nor can we sit in our nook home corners every time we start bleeding. Life continues, possibly so at a slow pace but it doesn’t stop. Sanitary pads with their extra absorbent features and leakproof assurance help us stay confident during our periods. We can wear anything we want and move as freely we wish without having to worry about soiling our pants. Sanitary pads are intuitively designed with materials and shape that helps you get extra protection against leakage for up to 10 hours straight. You can continue with your daily activities as you always do even on periods when you know a sanitary pad is taking care of the mess.
Extra Absorbency Ensures a Happy Mood
Sanitary pads are extra absorbent. They absorb the discharge and quickly dry the top layer to keep you feeling fresh and dry. It prevents irritation in the intimate area and prevents bacterial growth for Urinary tract Infections. We all love a dry and airy feel in our intimate areas and we hate it when sanitary pads cause any obstruction. Well, sanitary pads with extra high absorbency solve this problem and help you save your day with a good mood.

Seamless and Light
Sanitary pads are designed with high-grade absorbent materials these days. However, they are extremely thin and lightly padded giving you a seamless feel down there. They aren’t bulky and allow you to slip into anything without having to worry about catching the attention of people over there.
Easy to Dispose of
Sanitary pads offer a quick fix even when you are on a go. Whether you are traveling or working, sanitary pads are quick to change and dispose of. Simply peel them off, roll them inwards, wrap them in a newspaper and dispose of them. Put on a new pad and continue with your day as usual.

Structure of Sanitary Napkins
A lot of R&D has been done to keep the top surface dry so that it does not cling to the body and fits comfortably. This layer is a perforated film which allows liquid to pass through it quickly into the absorbent structure and stays dry, since the fluid is entrapped in the structure. It thus reduces the chance of leakage.
This component spreads out the fluid, especially in the longitudinal direction, for better utilisation of the product. By spreading fluid, it increases the probability of more retention of fluid.
One of the main characteristics of sanitary pads is to absorb body fluid and retain it for a long period of time and avoid back flow under pressure.
This is the last layer. It acts as a barrier to prevent fluid from leaking.
What are Sanitary Napkins Made of?

Topsheet and Secondary Topsheet
Soft top layer and secondary layer made of synthetic materials similar to those used in garments and in underwear. These synthetic materials are used to quickly channel the liquids into the absorbent core and keep your skin dry.

Absorbent Core
Flexible core made from absorbent cellulose. In a different thinner form, this material is used in different items such as tea bags & everyday garments. This absorbent material has been used in pads since 1920s. The flexible core is wrapped in a thin synthetic layer to keep it together with absorbent gel pearls added to the core, to improve the absorbency.

Odour Neutralizing Technology
Our Odour Neutralizing Technology is an exclusive material that contains selected components with a light scent similar to perfume. It is applied to the bottom of the absorbent core layer; thus optimized to mask and neutralize malodour in pads.

Backsheet
Moisture proof back layer made from synthetic materials to keep the fluid inside.

Adhesives
Adhesive is used to ensure the pad adheres to panty. mollitia, accusantium voluptates
Raw Material Collection
The first step in the manufacturing process is the collection of raw materials. The raw materials used in the production of disposable sanitary napkins include cellulose pulp, rayon, cotton, and a combination of these materials. Moreover, adhesives and dyes are also required. To increase the absorptive capacity of pads, SAP (super absorbent polymer) is also added. This polymer can absorb large amounts of fluid and helps to keep the napkin dry for a longer period of time. For organic sanitary pads pure cotton, bamboo fiber, banana fiber, and other natural fibers are used. These materials are sourced from suppliers and stored in the factory until they are needed. To make sure that these materials meet quality standards, they are typically tested by the quality control team before being used in production.
Fluff Formation
The next step in the production process is fluff forming. The cellulose pulp is inserted into a machine where knives spinning at 3000 rpm shared the pulp into fine fluff. This fluff is mixed with the SAP powder in the desired ratio to increase the absorption capacity of the fluff. Fine fluff is also responsible for the comfort and good feeling on the skin. Besides adding SAP powder to the fluff, some manufacturers also add strips of SAP paper inside the absorbent core to enhance the efficiency of the menstrual pads.
Core Building
The third step is the core building of the sanitary pad. The fine fluff mixed with SAP powder from the previous step is fed into a machine known as a core former. This machine shapes the layers of pads. Once the layers of the pad are shaped, the SAP paper strip is sandwiched between these layers in order to make the absorbent core more efficient. Moreover, the SAP paper strip helps to evenly distribute fluid throughout the core and prevents leaks. After the absorbent core is made, it is fed into another machine. This machine covers the absorbent core with a layer of cotton or rayon fabric. This helps to make the absorbent core more durable and prevents it from tearing easily.
Top Sheet Making
The next step in production is top sheet making. The top sheet is the layer of fabric that comes into direct contact with the body. It is generally made from a soft material such as cotton or rayon to provide comfort to the user. The top sheet is also perforated to allow fluid to pass through it and be absorbed by the absorbent core. The sanitary pads can be winged or wingless depending upon the design. The wings are generally made from a soft and comfortable fabric. They have adhesive material which helps to keep the napkin attached in the proper place. They help to keep the pad in place and prevent it from shifting during use.
Lamination
Once the top sheet is made, the outer layer that comes in contact with clothes is laminated with a layer of plastic or polyethylene. This helps to prevent fluid from leaking out of the sanitary napkin and from staining the clothes.
Wrapping and Packing
The last step in the manufacturing process is wrapping and packing. In this step, the pads are wrapped in individual wrappers and then packed in boxes or packs. The individual wrapping helps to keep the pads clean and hygienic. The packing of napkins can be of different types i.e. striping pack and wrap easy packing. The wrapped and packed napkins are then sent to the stores where they are sold to the customers. So these are the steps involved in the manufacturing process of a sanitary napkin. By following these steps, different types of the sanitary napkin can be manufactured such as winged pads, panty liners, thin pad, ultra-thin pad, etc. Now let’s move on to the quality control measures that are taken to ensure the quality of these hygiene products.
Potential Problems of Sanitary Napkins
Hygiene Risk
Improvisation led to introducing SAP to increase absorbency, they began to be made of Polyropelene (PP)-based perforated top sheet and polyethylene sheet as barrier. This improved its functionality. These products seem innocuous but they may be laced with dioxins, petrochemicals, GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) and fragrances. When these chemicals come in contact with sensitive skin, tissue may get irritated. Dioxins are carcinogenic in nature hence the risk of cancer increases even at very low levels of exposure. Additives such as fragrances, deodorants, absorbency agents, urea and formaldehyde enhance the properties but can cause allergies and skin reactions.
Disposability
Polymers in sanitary pads are non-biodegradable material. This may create many serious problems. Sanitary pads are made of SAP. When these pads are flushed, they block sewage lines as these chemicals absorb all the water in the sewage line. Disposed used sanitary pads cause occupational hazards for waste pickers who use their bare hands to sort out garbage. This is a health hazard. The common practice is to incinerate used sanitary pads. This releases dioxins and furans, creating an environmental hazard.
Affordability
In developing countries, the price of sanitary pads is often prohibitive for most of the population. About 70 per cent of Indian women still cannot afford sanitary pads and use unhygienic rags. In a 2012 study on diffusion and adaptation of sanitary pads to the target group, it was found that working status, education, type of home and monthly household incomes influence the usage of sanitary napkins. The reason behind its cost is the fact that most of the material used is imported from developed places. This ultimately increases the cost of the product.
Key Sanitary Napkin Inspection and Quality Control Tests

Resistance to Mechanical Penetration Test
The resistance to mechanical penetration test measures the force needed to rupture the sanitary napkin. It's also known as the ball burst procedure. Importers of products made with other materials, such as knitted or woven fabrics, will also sometimes conduct this test to measure material strength.

Aerobic Biodegradation Test
The aerobic biodegradation test determines the degree and rate of biodegradation of sanitary napkin materials in contact with soil, or a mixture of soil and mature compost.

Water Retention Test
In order to make sure the sanitary napkin satifies the required amount of liquid absorption, the water retention test is performed using the standard ASTM water retention test. This is a basic function test for sanitary napkins that can be done quickly in a factory. It involves immersing the item in water, running it through a centrifuge and comparing the weight before and after.

Flexibility Test
Testing the flexibility of the sanitary napkin ensures that the product conforms to international flexibility and manufacturing requirements. The flexibility test follows the standard ASTM circular bend procedure.
When you have your period, you need the assurance that your sanitary pad provides you reliable absorbency with no leakages. After all, what could be more embarrassing than having a period stain on your skirt? Comfort is of upmost importance, make sure your pad is comfortable and doesn’t cause you any itchiness or irritation. Here are three important things to note when choosing a sanitary pad:
Good Absorbency
One of the most important elements of a good sanitary pad is the ability to absorb a large volume of blood in a short span of time. Blood absorbed should also be locked into the centre core, eliminating the chance of backflow when pressure is applied to the pad (for example when sitting down). One way to tell whether the discharged blood is absorbed to the centre core is to observe the colour of the blood on the pad surface. The brighter or fresher the colour, the nearer the blood is to the surface, potentially leading to backflow and dampness. Conversely, if the colour appears a duller red, this means that blood has been effectively absorbed so that you feel dry, confident and are able to go about your daily activities without worrying about any leakage!
Length and Flow
Blood discharge is usually heavier at the start of your period, so it is essential to choose a pad that can quickly and effectively absorb your flow. Sanitary pads are classified as Day or Night, with Day pads being shorter (ranging from 17cm to 25cm) and Night pads going all the way to 35cm or more. The longer the pad, the more fluids it can absorb. Night pads also come with added features like wide hip guards to effectively prevent back leakages as you lie down. Some pads also come with side gathers to fit your body contours; this is to prevent side leakage throughout the night.
Material Comfort
Sanitary pads are either made of cotton or plastic netted. Everyone’s skin is different, thus the comfort levels with certain materials differ as well. Some girls prefer a soft touch whilst others may prefer a netted top layer. The type of material also affects its breathability. The menstrual flow itself could lead to your discomfort. On light flow days, moisture levels are lower but the constant rubbing of your skin against the sanitary pad can give rise to abrasions, making your skin red and itchy. A common misconception among women is that having rashes in their pubic area is something all women have to go through during their period. The truth is, the problem may quite easily be alleviated by simply changing to cotton-type sanitary pads!
